Why there is no melatonin in the Swisse range

Not one Swisse product in our four stores contains melatonin. In Australia it is a scheduled medicine, not a supplement. Here is the evening shelf instead.

People search for Swisse and melatonin together often enough that it is worth answering plainly: there is none, in any product, in any of our four stores.

That is not an oversight in the range. It is, in fact, a regulatory fact about where Swisse is made, and it explains what the evening shelf is built from instead.

Compare the evening formulas and local prices in the product comparison tool. You can switch category or change products in the same tool.

Is there melatonin in any Swisse product?

No. We ran the check across our Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines stores on 18 September 2026, product by product, and found none that contains it.

The reason is upstream of the brand. In Australia melatonin sits on the Poisons Standard, which is the list that decides how a substance may be supplied. Specifically, it is dispensed as a prescription or a pharmacist-only medicine, depending on the formulation and the dose, rather than sold as a supplement (TGA, regulation of melatonin products in Australia).

A complementary medicine listed on Australia's register cannot contain a substance scheduled that way. So an Australian supplement range does not have a melatonin product in it, and that holds whatever the rules are in the country you are buying from.

What is on the Swisse evening shelf instead?

Plants and magnesium. Eleven products in our Malaysia store carry an evening marker on the label, and seven of those are led by magnesium or by a plant blend. These five are the ones people ask about most.

Prices are our Malaysia store on 18 September 2026 and differ by country.

Two things fall out of that table. The cheapest box on the shelf is the gummies at RM 107.00, but the cheapest per tablet is the 120-pack of Magnesium Glycinate at RM 1.61 — and the same formula in a 60-pack costs RM 2.08, which is 29% more for each tablet. And Relax & Sleep, the one most people come looking for, is not on the shelf in Thailand at all.

What is in Swisse Relax & Sleep?

Four things, and each of them has a public source that describes what it is. These are the sentences we publish, word for word, on the ingredient pages.

  • Passionflower is a climbing vine native to the southeastern United States and to Central and South America. It is commonly taken for sleep and for stress. (US NIH, NCCIH)
  • Hop strobile is the name for the flowers of the plant Humulus lupulus. Hops are traditionally taken to aid sleep and to ease mild stress. (EU EMA herbal monograph)
  • Lemon balm preparations are made from the dried leaf of Melissa officinalis. Lemon balm is traditionally taken to aid sleep and to ease mild stress. (EU EMA herbal monograph)
  • Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal psychological function. (EU Register 432/2012)

Those four are the whole formula. Passionflower and magnesium also appear in Ashwagandha Calm+, so the two products are closer to each other than the names suggest — the real difference is hops and lemon balm on one side, ashwagandha and reishi on the other.

What is in Ashwagandha Calm+?

Ashwagandha, passionflower, reishi and magnesium.

Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub from India, Africa and the Middle East that has been used as a medicinal plant for thousands of years, particularly in Ayurvedic practice. It is commonly taken for stress and for sleep. (US NIH, NCCIH)

So the two formulas overlap on passionflower and magnesium, and differ on the rest. Specifically, Relax & Sleep leans on hops and lemon balm, while Ashwagandha Calm+ leans on ashwagandha and reishi. Each product page lists its own ingredients, and Ingredients A to Z links every one of these to the other products that carry it.

Where does magnesium glycinate fit?

It is the one on this shelf with no plant in it at all. Magnesium Glycinate is magnesium and nothing else, which is what makes it the simplest on the shelf to reason about.

The glycinate part names the form the mineral is bound to. Notably, the word after magnesium is the only thing on the front separating four different products: there is plain Ultiboost Magnesium, and Magnesium Glycinate, and Magnesium, Calcium + D3, and a magnesium powder. That is the same pattern we wrote about in what every Swisse range name means.

On magnesium itself, the EU Register of authorised wordings is the source, and it lists several: contributes to normal muscle function, to normal functioning of the nervous system, to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and to normal psychological function.

How long does each pack last?

At one a day, which is what these labels direct: 60 tablets is two months, 120 is four. That is the number to hold next to the price, because it is what turns RM 193.00 into four months and RM 125.00 into two.

It also decides whether the cheaper per-tablet price is real money to you. The 120-pack of Magnesium Glycinate saves RM 0.47 a tablet over the 60-pack, which is RM 56 across the bottle — but only if you get to the end of it.

Morning or evening?

All five carry an evening marker, which comes from the label's own directions rather than from us. Our finder reads that marker when it builds a routine. That is why they land in the evening half of a routine, while a multivitamin lands in the morning half.

If you are already taking magnesium in another product, that is worth knowing before you add a second one: the finder asks what you already take, and it will not hand you two products led by the same nutrient.

So which one do I pick?

Five questions, in this order, and the shelf comes down to one bottle. None of them is about what a product does — they are about what is in it, what it costs and whether your store has it.

  1. Do you want a plant blend or just the mineral? Relax & Sleep, Ashwagandha Calm+ and the gummies are plant blends with magnesium in them. Magnesium Glycinate is the mineral on its own.
  2. Are you already taking magnesium? Four of the five products on this shelf contain it, and so do the Ultivite multivitamins. Two of them stack without you noticing.
  3. Tablet, gummy or powder? Three tablets, one gummy, one powder. This is the question that settles it for most people and it is the one the label answers fastest.
  4. How long do you want the pack to last? 60 tablets is two months at one a day, 120 is four. Buying four months of something you have not taken before is the mistake the per-tablet price talks you into.
  5. Then, and only then, compare per tablet. Within one formula the bigger pack is 29% cheaper per tablet. Across two different formulas the per-tablet price is comparing two different things.

Worked example: if you want the mineral on its own, in tablet form, and you are confident you will finish the bottle — that is Magnesium Glycinate 120 at RM 1.61 a tablet, and the 60-pack of the identical formula is the more expensive way to buy it.

Questions people ask

Does Swisse make a melatonin supplement?

No. Not in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand or the Philippines, and not in Australia either. Melatonin is a scheduled medicine there, so an Australian supplement range cannot contain it.

What is the difference between Relax & Sleep and Ashwagandha Calm+?

They share passionflower and magnesium. Relax & Sleep adds hops and lemon balm; Ashwagandha Calm+ adds ashwagandha and reishi. Both are 60-tablet packs and both carry an evening marker on the label.

Is Swisse Magnesium Glycinate different from Swisse Magnesium?

The formula is different and the word on the front tells you which you are holding. Glycinate names the form the mineral is bound to. We stock both, plus Magnesium, Calcium + D3 and a magnesium powder.

Which one is cheapest?

Cheapest box and cheapest tablet are two different bottles. The Calm+Sleep Gummies are the cheapest box at RM 107.00; the cheapest per tablet is the 120-pack of Magnesium Glycinate at RM 1.61, in the most expensive box on the shelf.

Which store carries Relax & Sleep?

Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines at the time of writing, but not Thailand. Availability moves, so the shelf in your own store is the answer: the bar at the top of the page switches between them.

Prices and store lists were read from our own four stores on 18 September 2026 and will move. Every ingredient sentence is quoted from the source named beside it. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
